What I’m building
The first release focuses on scanning menus, exploring dish images and descriptions, and saving favorites in a personal library. A short onboarding introduces the app, while a profile brings together account settings, subscriptions, and character customization.
Design and development
I design and build the native iPhone app and its companion website. I used Figma to design the app screens and prototype animations, including the chef character’s expressions and the menu capture and scanning sequence. These prototypes guide the implementation in code. A warm chef character anchors the visual identity, with a light interface and small animations that make the scanning process easier to follow. The website introduces the app and its planned monthly subscriptions; purchases will take place in the app.
Engineering decisions
A translation is only part of the answer
The scanning flow is designed around on-device menu text recognition and dish matching, with images and descriptions that help explain unfamiliar dishes.
Keep uncertainty visible
Dish identity, imagery, and information confidence are treated separately. The backend is being developed to check existing dish records before requesting AI output, while keeping access rights and usage limits on the server.
